That's how time smells

The scent of the seasons.

What makes spring so irresistible? What does the perfect summer smell like? Where does the melancholy of autumn come from? Can you actually smell snow?

Every season has its own scent, which holds a whole universe of emotions and memories.

Every season has its own attitude to life

Spring, summer, fall, and winter. Every season has its own scent. A distinctive mood that we associate with certain emotions. More than any other sense, the sense of smell has the potential to trigger memories. Our early scent experiences create reference points that shape our entire lives from birth onwards.

Perhaps it is the sweet scent of lilacs that makes us fall in love with life all over again. The smell of grass after a summer rain that awakens the carefree child in us. Or the leaves in autumn that smell of retreat and transience. Every experience contains an olfactory memory.

Spring – The scent of new beginnings

When the days after the winter months become more powerful and energetic, we humans also become more active. Plants and grasses sprout curiously from the ground everywhere. "It smells like spring!" we say in anticipation of the warmer days.

Behind this feeling is geosmin—a scent released by microorganisms in the soil. And it is stored in our brains as a pleasant memory.

Rain also contributes to the enticing scent of spring: water droplets penetrate the pores of leaves, releasing clear, fresh air. In tropical and subtropical regions with long rainy seasons, this scent is even more intense.

Fragrances for the warm season:
Blütezeit – Invigorates. Inspires. Strengthens your clarity.
Gebirgsbach – Awakens. Sharpens your vision. Brings clarity.
Mußezeit – Calms. Relaxes. Creates space for you.

Summer – Nature in full bloom

The herbs in the garden, freshly mowed grass, or a fragrant flower meadow—when temperatures rise, we perceive smells more intensely. Pollen also changes the air, depending on which plant species are currently in bloom.

The different scents literally flood our sense of smell in summer. They are an opportunity to delve deeper into the cycles of nature. What we breathe in here and now may have originated in a place hundreds of kilometers away. An exciting question: What story does this smell tell?

Autumn - time of transformation

Depending on the location, the four seasons in the temperate climate zone vary in intensity. Nevertheless, there is one reliable phenomenon that all regions—from Canada to Mongolia—have in common: in autumn, the days become shorter and the leaves fall from the trees to the ground.

When a leaf takes its "last breath," it emits a series of gases. The musty, earthy smell of the foliage reminds our sense of smell of the transience of life. A feeling of melancholy spreads. And with it, the need to let go of the old and start a new chapter in life.

Suitable scents for fall:
Immergrün – Grounds. Strengthens. Brings serenity.
Heimkehr – Slows you down. Warms you. You are completely at peace.
Bergluft – Clears the mind. Strengthens. Has a balancing effect.

Winter – A feel for snow

Winter cannot be defined by a specific smell. Rather, it is the absence of smell. This is because our noses perceive smells less intensely in cooler temperatures. The scent molecules also move more slowly in the atmosphere.

Can you smell snow? In a way, yes, because it binds environmental toxins—our noses can take in the clear, purified air.

Paradoxically, we Winterzeit associate Winterzeit with the intense, warm scent of cinnamon and cloves. The reason: tropical spices were brought to Europe from Indonesia by ship as early as the 15th century. Since then, we have been using them to flavor gingerbread and Christmas cookies.

Spicy, warm scents for winter:
Abendgold – Envelops you in warmth. Gives you a feeling of security. Brings serenity.
Sternenzelt – Warms. Relaxes. Awakens joie de vivre.
Winterzeit – Gently balances. Warms and relaxes.
