Snowy landscape

Winter - A feel for snow

Winter cannot be defined by a specific smell. Rather, it is the absence of it. This is because our noses perceive odors less intensely in cooler temperatures and scent molecules move more slowly in the atmosphere.
Can you smell snow? In a way, yes, because it binds environmental toxins and our nose can take in the clear, purified air. Paradoxically, we also associate Winterzeit with the intense, warm scent of cinnamon and cloves. The reason: the tropical spices arrived in Europe by ship from Indonesia as early as the 15th century, where they have been used in gingerbread and Christmas cookies ever since.
