Origin of peppermint

Peppermint is one of the oldest medicinal herbs. Even the ancient Egyptians and Romans knew that it helped with all kinds of ailments, for example headaches or stomach problems. In the Middle Ages, monks found another possible application. They used peppermint to clean teeth and for respiratory diseases. The plant, which originally came from Asia, was also increasingly planted in Europe.

Peppermint thrives best in moist, nutrient-rich and loose soil, ideally in partial shade.

How peppermint is extracted

Peppermint oil is obtained by steam distillation from the intensely fragrant leaves of peppermint. They are harvested at the beginning of Blütezeit. This is when the essential oil content is at its highest. Short transportation routes and fast processing are particularly important as they guarantee the high quality of the peppermint oil obtained. One liter of essential oil with a beneficial aromatherapy effect is obtained from 100 kg of slightly dried herb.

The different types of mint

Spearmint, spearmint, nana mint, apple mint, field mint and more - peppermint differs from the other 30 or so types of mint primarily due to its high menthol content, which can make up to 60 percent of the essential oil and ensures its unmistakable aroma. Incidentally, its pungent taste earned it the name "pepper" mint. 
Application in naturopathy

Mint oil has proven effective for a variety of ailments. Inhaling the scent can help to alleviate the symptoms of colds. It also helps with dizziness, headaches or nausea (including travel sickness). Applied externally, the oil can relieve muscle pain because it promotes blood circulation. It can also help with nerve pain or itching caused by mosquito bites, for example. It can also be used internally, for example for inflammation of the oral mucosa or in dental or oral care products. It also helps with gastrointestinal complaints such as flatulence, cramps or bloating. 
Application in cosmetics

Menthol, the main component of peppermint oil, is known for its skin-cooling and circulation-promoting properties. This is why it is often used in skin care products such as body lotions that are applied to the skin. In contrast, peppermint oil should not be used in baths because its cooling properties can cause chills.
