Origin of peppermint

Peppermint, one of the oldest medicinal herbs, was known to ancient Egyptians and Romans for its healing properties, particularly for headaches and stomach ailments. In the Middle Ages, monks discovered additional uses, such as for cleaning teeth and treating respiratory diseases. Originally from Asia, peppermint cultivation later spread to Europe.

It thrives in moist, loose, nutrient-rich soil in partial shade.

Extracting Peppermint for Our Room Fragrances

Peppermint oil is extracted from the plant's intensely fragrant leaves via steam distillation. These are harvested when essential oil content peaks as they begin to bloom. Short transport routes and quick processing are crucial for maintaining the extracted oil's high quality. 1 litre of essential oil is extracted from 100kg of slightly dried herb to ensure you enjoy its beneficial aromatherapy properties.

More about Peppermint

The Mint Family

Spearmint, Green Mint, Nana Mint, Apple Mint, Field Mint, and more… Peppermint stands out among roughly 30 mint species due to its high menthol content, comprising up to 60 per cent of its essential oil and creating an unmistakable aroma. Fun fact: Its spicier flavour inspired the name ‘pepper’ mint.

Natural Medicine Applications

Mint oil has proven effective for various ailments. Inhaling its scent can alleviate cold symptoms and help with dizziness, headaches, and nausea (including motion sickness). Applied externally, it can ease muscle discomfort by promoting circulation and relieve nerve pain or itching from insect bites. Pure, high-quality peppermint oil can be used internally for oral mucosa inflammation or in dental care products. It also aids with gastrointestinal issues like bloating, cramps, or feelings of fullness.

Cosmetic Applications

Menthol is peppermint oil's main component and is known for its skin-cooling and circulation-boosting properties. It’s commonly used in body lotions and other popular care products. However, avoid using peppermint oil in full baths, as its cooling properties may trigger chills.
